Favicon for WordPress
Updated October 13, 2026
WordPress calls the favicon the Site Icon. You do not edit any code: you upload one square image and WordPress creates the sizes it needs.
Steps for most themes
- Create a 512×512 PNG with the favicon generator and download the ZIP. Use
android-chrome-512x512.pngfrom it. - In your dashboard open Appearance → Customize → Site Identity.
- Under Site Icon choose Select site icon and upload the file.
- Crop if asked, then click Publish.
Block themes and newer WordPress versions may place this option in the Site Editor or under Settings → General. Menu names change between versions, so search the dashboard for “Site Icon” if you cannot find it.
If the old icon still shows
- Hard refresh the page or open it in a private window.
- Clear any caching plugin and your CDN cache.
- Check that your theme or an SEO plugin is not outputting a different favicon link in the head.
Manual method
If you manage your theme files, you can paste the favicon HTML code into the header template of a child theme instead. The Site Icon option is simpler and survives theme updates.
