PNG to ICO converter details
The favicon.ico in your ZIP contains 16×16, 32×32 and 48×48 pixel images in a single file, which is what browsers expect when they request /favicon.ico. You can also download just the ICO file. Because the conversion happens in your browser, even confidential logos never leave your device.
Best PNG for a favicon
Use a square PNG of 512×512 pixels or more with a transparent or solid background. Wide logos should be cropped to a symbol or monogram first. Files up to 10 MB are supported, and SVG files up to 1 MB are cleaned before use. See the favicon size guide for what each exported file is for.
PNG to favicon FAQ
How do you create a favicon ICO file?
An ICO file bundles several images, typically 16×16, 32×32 and 48×48 pixels, in one file. Upload your image to InstantFavicon and the ZIP includes a ready-made favicon.ico. Place it in your site’s root folder so browsers that request /favicon.ico can find it.
What is a favicon image?
A favicon image is the picture file used as your site icon, usually a square PNG, ICO or SVG. Start from a square image of at least 512×512 pixels so it can be scaled down cleanly to 16×16 and 32×32.
What size should a favicon be?
Provide at least 32×32 (or 48×48) for browser tabs, a 180×180 Apple touch icon, and 192×192 and 512×512 icons for Android and installable web apps. For Google Search results use a square icon in multiples of 48 pixels. A 512×512 master image is the best starting point.
How do you add a favicon in HTML?
Upload the favicon files to your site’s root folder, then add link tags inside the <head> of each page, for example <link rel="icon" href="/favicon.ico" sizes="any">. The generator writes the full snippet for you with a copy button. If an old icon still shows, clear your browser cache.
